Aage Thygesen
22 November 1892 Jebjerg – 10 May 1979
The son of a school teacher, Thygesen studied voice with various teachers: Anders Brem, Vilhelm Herold,
Victor Bendix, Emilie Ulrich, at the opera school of the Royal Opera House Copenhagen – and in 1922/23, when he had already started his
career, in Naples with Fernando De Lucia. Well, he may not have learned a whole lot from De
Lucia, but he certainly sang the same tessitura – tenor arias in baritone key!
He made his debut in 1921 in Copenhagen, and would spend his entire career there as a concert singer, specializing in oratorio – and above
all, as an immensely prolific and popular recording artist. Around 1930, his records alone would earn him the equivalent of what is today 130,000
Euros (or 150,000 US-Dollars) per year! He also sang a lot on the radio.
