Włodzimierz Malawski

Malawski started studying medicine, but then switched to singing at the Kraków conservatory. Kraków was also where he made his debut in concert, on 24 May 1893. He got his first operatic engagement with a touring company. On 24 March 1897, he made his debut in Lviv as Jeník, and was successful enough that he stayed in Lviv until 1900, and again from 1902 to 1907; the two seasons in between were spent in Sosnowiec. From 1907 to 1911, he was at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, then he toured with concerts for one year, arriving as far as New York City. From 1912 to 1914, he sang in Poznan before leaving Poland. He returned in 1922, not just to Poland but also to Poznan, where he was now primarily a stage director (until 1932). Malawski sang opera (Turiddu, Pedro, Pinkerton, Herodes, Narraboth, Ernani, Julien, Stefan in Straszny dwór) and lots of operetta. He was praised for his musicality and stage presence. Malawski was also a composer, and a voice teacher. Many thanks to Axel Weggen for the exceedingly rare recording. |
