Guido Ciccolini
1885 Roma – 11 May 1963 Neptune/New Jersey
In 1903, Ciccolini began to study with Antonio Cotogni, and he made his debut in 1907 at the Politeama Azeglio in Bologna
in Traviata.
In 1909, Ciccolini toured, with the company of Mme de Restier, Belgium and Holland (Madama Butterfly, 17 March 1909 Amsterdam, de Restier,
Galan, Nistri, Gioacchino Welhis).
This was followed by tours in England, Ireland, and France. He sang with great success in Russia (St. Petersburg, Odessa) and Warsaw.
In 1911,
he moved to Australia engaged by the Williamson Opera Company, and there he sang in Bohème with Nellie Melba.
The opposition of
the diva caused his dismissal. He devoted his time to concerts and vaudeville.
He went back to Italy and was chosen by
Wolf-Ferrari for the Italian premiere of I quattro rusteghi (Teatro Lirico, Milano).
Starting in 1915, Ciccolini sang several seasons with the Boston Opera. In 1915, he sang Turiddu
in Havanna.
After the war, he moved to the United States where, in 1918,
he made his debut at the Auditorium in Chicago (Duca, Alfredo, Almaviva, Rodolfo). In 1926, he sang at the funeral of
his friend Rodolfo Valentino.
He retired after 1930. In 1959,
in New York, he was the guest of the Public Library in an evening devoted to Caruso, Galli-Curci and Melba, artists
he knew.
