José Tudare

Tudare's career is all but undocumented. I have no idea when he made his debut, but he may have got a
late start, because between 1957 and 1960, Tudare was a comprimario in Gent – at 35 to 38 years old. He was also a
comprimario in Marseille and Liège (no precise dates known). He returned to Gent by the mid-1970s as a full-fledged dramatic tenor, singing Otello among others: at more than 50 years old. Everything I found about him (apart from the comprimario years in Gent of course) is from that period: Don José in Aix-en-Provence in 1974, Haroun (Djamileh) on the French radio ORTF in 1975, Canio in Marseille in 1976, Erik in Saint-Étienne in 1976, Faust in Belfast in 1977, Turiddu in Lille in 1978, Cavaradossi in Dijon in 1979. Given his 1922 birth, his career cannot have lasted long after that, and if he started singing main parts only in the 1970s, he had less than ten years for it. This would explain why he isn't better known, his more than decent singing notwithstanding. He must have retired to Belgium, because he died there (although I don't know where exactly, but he's in the freely accessible database of Belgian death cases). Tudare was also a gifted painter.
