Originally a railroader, he started studying voice in 1937. From 1942 (debut role: Pedro) to 1966, he sang heroic tenor roles at the Royal Opera Stockholm: Tannhäuser, Florestan, Max, José, Samson, Canio, Tambourmajor. Guest appearances at the Vienna Staatsoper (two performances as Tannhäuser, 1950 and 1958, respectively), in Copenhagen and at the Edinburgh Festival.

His daughter Gunilla Söderström was a mezzosoprano at the Stockholm opera theater.
