He studied voice in Moscow, Vienna and Florence.
From 1983 to 1990, he was a soloist at the Bolshoj. Then he went to Germany (hence the German transliteration "Alexander"), where
he was a member of the Cologne opera theater.
Guest appearances at Covent Garden, in Berlin (Deutsche Oper), at La Scala, in Munich, Hamburg, Tokyo, at the Vienna State Opera,
the Salzburg festival and in Wiesbaden.
In later years, he sang comprimario parts.
