Biographical notes

Salvatore Puma was born on May 6th, 1920, in Racalmuto, in the province of Agrigento, Sicily, Italy.

He studied singing in Parma and later in Milan with the former baritone Emilio Ghirardini.

His debut was on April 10th, 1949 at the Teatro Rossini, in Pesaro, as Radames in "Aida".

Salvatore Puma sang at all the most important Italian theatres and at the music festivals of Verona (Arena), Torre del Lago (Puccini Festival), Florence (Maggio Musicale Florentino) and Rome (Terme di Caracalla). Besides, he sang in Paris, Strasbourg, Vienna, Brusels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Malta, Hamburg, Munich, Zürich, Bucharest, Budapest, Sophia, Belgrade, La Coruña, Tokyo and Osaka. In the United States he sang in Philadelphia, New Orleáns, Miami and Hartford. In Latin America he sang in Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and Santiago de Chile.

Salvatore Puma belonged to a kind of singers almost completely "extinct" in our days: the "lirico spinto" tenor. He had the "bad luck" to coincide in time and place with plenty of tenors who sang the same repertoire: Vasco Campagnano, Mario Filippeschi, Roberto Turrini, Umberto Borsò, Giuseppe Vertecchi, Kurt Baum, Achile Braschi, Mario Ortica, Antonio Annaloro, Gastone Limarilli, Luigi Ottolini, Angelo Loforese, Rafael Lagares, José Soler, Carlos Guichandut, Primo Zambruno, Pier Miranda Ferraro, not to mention THE TITANS, Mario Del Monaco and Franco Corelli, and the emerging Carlo Bergonzi and Flaviano Labò. In our times, Salvatore Puma would be unrivalled.

He had a normal repertoire of 25 tenor roles. His best role and the one he sang most frequently was, undoubtedly, Manrico in "Il trovatore", closely followed by Andrea in "Andrea Chénier", Radames in "Aida" and Turiddu in "Cavalleria rusticana". He was also successful in "Pagliacci", "Norma", "Carmen", "Turandot", "Manon Lescaut" and "Tosca". He included roles from the very lyric Edgardo in "Lucia di Lammermoor", the Duke in "Rigoletto" and Alfredo in "La traviata" to Johnson in "La fanciulla del West", Enzo in "La Gioconda" and the main roles in "Ernani" and "Otello".

He appeared, less frequently, as Luigi in "Il tabarro", Pinkerton in "Madama Butterfly", Osaka in "Iris", Giorgio in "Amica", Maurizio in "Adriana Lecouvreur" and the title role in "Lohengrin".

He was also asked to sing in rarely performed operas, such as:
"Nozze istriane" (Antonio Smareglia) (role: Lorenzo)
"Giuliano de' Medici" (Rodolfo Del Corona) (role: Giuliano)
"La madre" (Donato Di Veroli) (role: Il figlio)
"Fedra" (Ildebrando Pizzetti) (role: Ippolito)
"Requiem per Elisa" (Roberto Hazon) (role: Elio)
"Margot" (Nuccio Fiorda) (role: Pierre)
"Oceana" (Antonio Smareglia) (role: Init)
"Don Carlo" (Pasquale Bona) (role: Don Carlo)
"Il prigioniero" (Luigi Dallapiccola) (roles: Il carceriere/L'inquisitore)
"Una storia d'altri tempi" (Dino Milella) (role: Heathcliff)

He had a contract to sing in Florence, in 1951, the role of Arrigo in "I vespri siciliani" with Maria Callas. But after the first rehearsals he was not considered adequate and was replaced at the last moment by Greek tenor Giorgio Kokolios Bardi. Another artistic failure was in Mexico City. He had to sing two performances of "Il trovatore" (May 1953), but during the first one he sang completely out of tune and the audience reaction was so terrible that the second performance had to be postponed until Puma was recovered. He sang his second Manrico in Mexico correctly, but he had already been judged by critics and public.

He sang in Chile during the 1953 season and very soon became a favourite, mainly in "Andrea Chénier". He was so pleased with the Chilean public that he accepted to sing the role of the Duke in "Rigoletto". The tenor scheduled to sing this role, the Russian Nikolaj Timofeev, was a total failure in his debut, and Puma was asked to sing the second performance. It was not the best Duke in the history of the Chilean theatre, but he saved the situation with honour.

Puma had a long career, from 1949 to 1977 (actually, to 1982). It is true that his was not the best tenor voice in his time and that his career developed mainly in Italian provincial theaters, but he was a sincere and honest artist, of a kind that we find no more in these times. During the last years of his career he sang namely in theaters of southern Italy and his last performances took place in April 1978, at the Teatro Bellini in Catania, singing the role of Andrej Khovanskij in Musorgskij's "Khovanshchina" with Boris Christoff and Raffaele Arië.

Puma left few and very scarce commercial records (for CETRA, on 78 rpm), but his voice can be fully appreciated in the live performances of "Il tabarro" (Hamburg, 1953) and "Iris" (Milan, 1956).

Salvatore Puma died in Rome on March 16th, 2007 of a heart disease (an aorta burst), at 86 years old.
