Biographical notes

Cosentino sang in the city chorus. While studying, Cosentino sang small roles, in 1890 at the Vittorio Emanuele in Messina as Laerzio in Hamlet, in 1891 as Alvaro in Africana at the Bellini in Catania and in 1893, again at the Bellini, as Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor. Later he went to Milan where he further studied. In 1895, Consentino made his debut as Enzo in Gioconda at the Sociale in Udine. In 1899, he was engaged at the Scala in order to sing Pollione in Norma. Toscanini, conductor of the performance, was not satisfied with the cast and imposed on the direction of the theatre to change it. Cosentino, who had already sung Norma in Turin under the baton of Toscanini, sure of his value, took legal action against the direction of La Scala and obtained a large compensation. After his retirement, he opened a singing school in Milan.
