Joachim Sattler sings Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg: Morgenlich leuchtend
Born and died in Affolterbach (Hesse), 21 July 1899 and 15 July 1984, respectively. First a school teacher, he made his debut as a singer in Darmstadt in 1925, where he stayed through 1936. After a short period in Barmen-Elberfeld, he came to Hamburg, where he was the first heldentenor from 1936 to 1952. He continued his career in Darmstadt and Kassel till 1957. A regular guest in Dresden and Vienna, he also performed in Paris and Barcelona, and from 1927 to 1931 at the Bayreuth festival, and during World War II at the Zoppot festival. He sang particularly often under Furtwängler's baton. Specializing in Wagner, he also was a highly thought-of Pedro (in Tiefland) and Otello. He made very few records; most of what is documenting his voice are radio performances made after 1945.
I would like to thank Anton Bieber for the two Meistersinger recordings and label scans, and for the picture (top).
