He studied voice in Munich with Paul Bender, and in Oslo; debut with the touring Bayerische Landesbühne as Pinkerton as early as 1936. He sang in Augsburg (1939–42), in Dresden, where he started to sing heldentenor roles, 1946–49 at the Berlin State Opera, then at the Munich State Opera for the long rest of his career (until 1988!).

As a guest, he was regularly in Bayreuth (from 1951), at the Met, the Scala, Covent Garden, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Salzburg Festival, and very often at the Vienna State Opera.

After his retirement, he taught voice in Munich.
