He was discovered by Cosima Wagner, who arranged for his vocal training. He made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 1904 (Froh in Rheingold, Heinrich der Schreiber in Tannhäuser). After further vocal studies, he sang Parsifal in Bayreuth in 1906 (and again in 1908).

1907–10, he was a member of the theater in Coburg-Gotha, 1910–14 in Bremen, 1918–22 in Graz, and 1922–29 in Freiburg, where he also worked as a stage director.

1930–37, he was both theater and stage director in Kaiserslautern, 1937–44 theater director in Schwerin.

His most important roles were Siegmund, Lohengrin, Stolzin and Pedro.
