He studied voice in his native Stuttgart, where he also made his debut in 1960 as Arturo in Lucia, and stayed for
followed by one season in Braunschweig and two in Münster. 1965–86 in Hannover, then in Bielefeld. Towards the end of
his long career, he was a member of the Erfurt theater (early 2000s).
He sang a total of about 90 roles, from Ferrando to Kaiser, and from Max to Shujskij, with a preponderance of the dramatic
Guest appearances in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Berlin (Deutsche Oper), Düsseldorf-Duisburg and at many smaller German theaters,
at the Vienna Volksoper, in Strasbourg and Geneva. In concert, he appeared at La Scala, but also in rather unlikely places
like Paraguay, Kenia and notably Vietnam, where he was involved in the reopening of the Hanoi opera house (a French colonial
building) after thorough renovation in 1999.
