Paolo Zocchi

Born Paul Dominique Zocchi in Paris on 6 November 1870. His father was an Italian immigrant.

Le dimanche de M. Zocchi.
Cédant au vœu des Rouennais, M. Zocchi consentit a chanter hier après-midi Lakmé au Théâtre des Arts. Obligé de paraître le soir à l'Opéra-Comique dans Cavalleria rusticana qui commence à huit heures, il comptait prendre le train de marée de quatre heures cinquante-huit. Tout alla bien d'abord ; Lakmé finit à quatre heures dix-sept ; le ténor eut le temps de répondre à deux rappels avant de gagner la gare. Mais à la gare, fâcheuse nouvelle ; on prévoit pour le train de marée un retard de deux heures. Que faire ? prendre une automobile ? les routes sont mauvaises ; le vent contraire. Obtenir un train spécial ? On essaye, mais les pourparlers avec Paris sont si longs que M. Zocchi s'est décidé pour l'automobile quand arrive l'autorisation. Il espérait rejoindre a Mantes le rapide de six heures ; mais, à Pont-de-l'Arche, des gendarmes lui dressent procès-verbal pour excès de vitesse et lui font perdre un temps précieux. Quand le voyageur arrive à Mantes, il y a cinq minutes que le rapide est passé. Il ne reste plus au malheureux ténor qu'à prévenir son directeur qu'il ne pourra prendre part à la représentation. C'est une grosse amende. Heureusement, M. Carré est un directeur paternel ; il change l'ordre de son spectacle et rejette Cavalleria à la fin de la soirée, ce qui permet au voyageur d'arriver à temps. Et voilà comme M. Zocchi comprend le repos du dimanche.

Actually, on February 25th, the temporary director was Albert Vizentini due to the illness of Albert Carré.

On 19 March 1906 at the Opéra in Nice, he sang in the world premiere of Sanga by Isidore de Lara with Charlotte Wyns, Fély Dereyne, Lucien Fugère.

In 1909/10, he toured the USA with the Layolle Company. The company included: Escalaïs, Nuibo, Hansatto, Charal, Huberty, Carque, Lacombre, Demedy, Fierans, Cahuzac, Sterckmans, Allard.

New Orleans

ZOCCHI was in New Orleans in the 1909/10 season and sang quite a number of roles. His debut came on 30 October 1909 as Raoul (Huguenots). His other roles were Fernand; des Grieux; Faust; Julien (Louise); Araquil (La Navarraise); Don José; Roméo; Le duc (Rigoletto); and Canio. On 6 February 1910, he sang Radames, replacing Escalaïs who was indisposed.
At a benefit performance (2 Feb 1910) he was heard in the act 1 duet from Lakmé ("C'est le dieu de la jeunesse" with the soprano Cahuzac.
The newspapers reported that following the end of this New Orleans season the troupe would tour throughout the United States and Canada. The suggested route would be: Kansas City; St. Louis, Missouri; Cincinnati, Ohio; Cleveland, Ohio; Atlantic City, New Jersey; Washington, D.C.; Buffalo, New York; Pittsburg, Pa, and then Montréal, Canada from 11 to 23 April, and Québec City from 25 to 30 April.

Zocchi opened the season in Aida on 10 October with Mézy, Legros, Imbert, Mme Madeski, and Mme Bourgeois. Zocchi was diagnosed as not quite having the voice for Radames. Zocchi sang a few months without much success. He resigned in December 1912 invoking medical reasons.
He died in Clermont (Oise) in April 1923.
