Paul Franz

November 30, 1876 Paris – April 20, 1950 Paris

Picture of Paul Franz
Franz was born François Gauthier. He changed his family name to Franz because of the tenor Jules Gautier who was already known in France. Some references cite that Jules Gautier was really Franz Gautier, but that's wrong.

Franz worked first for the railroad. After being refused by the Paris conservatory, he took lessons with Louis Delaquerrière in Paris. Musica organized in 1908 a tenor competition, and Franz received the first prize.

His debut was as Lohengrin in Nantes in January 1909, and as a result, he made his debut at the Opéra on February 1, 1909 as Lohengrin.

His career at the Opéra evolved as follows:
1909, Samson et Dalila (Samson), Sigurd (Sigurd), Roméo et Juliette (Roméo), Faust (Faust), Tannhäuser (Tannhäuser)
1910, La damnation de Faust (Faust), La Walkyrie (Siegmund on December 10 with Bréval, Bourdon, Maty, Lequien, Journet, Messager), Aida (Radames)
1911, Les maîtres chanteurs de Nuremberg (Walther on February 17 with Gall, Daumas, Delmas, Campagnola, Rigaux, Journet, Delmas, Cerdan, Messager), Le Cid (Rodrigue)
Then Le prophète (Jean on February 26, 1912 with Lapeyrette, Comes, Journet, Gresse, Vidal), Tristan et Isolde (Tristan, 1913), Le vieil aigle (Toloik on May 13, 1914 with Vally, Renaud, Rey, Catherine), Patrie (Karloo on December 7, 1916 with Bréval, Campredon, Delmas, Gresse, Busser), Messidor (Guillaume on February 22, 1917 with Lapeyrette, Gall, Delmas, Plamondon, Noté, Ruhlmann), Otello (Otello on January 23, 1919 with Bugg, Lapeyrette, Dubois, Vigna), Monna Vanna (Prinzevalle, 1919), Salamnbô (Mathô on May 21, 1919 with Chenal, Laute-Brun, Lafitte, Renaud, Delmas, Noël, Ruhlmann), Les huguenots (Raoul, 1925), Le crépuscule des dieux (Siegfried on March 2 1925 with Demougeot, Cros, Lapeyrette, Carbelly, Duclos, Delmas, Gaubert), Siegfried (Siegfried on October 11, 1926 with Montfort, Bourdon, Haramboure, Delmas, Fabert, Duclos, Narçon, Gaubert), La Juive (Eléazar on April 3, 1933 with Hoerner, Guyla, Huberty, Rambaud, Calverie, Froumenty, Ruhlmann).

At the Opéra, he created PARSIFAL (Parsifal on January 4, 1914), JEANNE D'ARC (Dumois on November 24, 1917), HÉLÈNE (Pâris on January 20, 1919), LA LEGENDE DE SAINT CHRISTOPHE (Auférus on June 6, 1920), ANTAR (Antar on March 14, 1921), LES TROYENS (Enée on June 10, 1921), HERODIADE (Jean on December 22, 1921), LA FILLE DE ROLAND (Gérald on October 27, 1922), PADMAVATI (Ratan-Sen on June 1, 1923), LE JARDIN DU PARADIS (Le prince on October 29, 1923), ESCLARMONDE (Chévalier Roland on December 24, 1923), ESTHER PRINCESSE D'ISRAEL (Mardochée on April 28,1925), L'ÎLE DÉSENCHANTÉE (Solnek on November 19, 1925), SALAMINE (Xerxès on June 17, 1929), and LA TENTATION DE SAINT ANTOINE (Satan on May 8, 1930).
