He began his career in Glyndebourne: 1987 in the festival choir, 1988 (after graduating from the Royal Academy of Music London) as a soloist with the Glyndebourne Touring Company (debut role: Váňa in Káťa Kabanová). In 1989, he made his Covent Garden debut as Italienischer Sänger.

He sang a lot with the English National Opera, in Antwerp, at the Glyndebourne Festival and at Covent Garden. Other than that, he sang at mid-sized and large theaters all over the world: Ghent and Brussels, Bonn and Cologne, Geneva and Lausanne, Buenos Aires (Colón), Düsseldorf-Duisburg, San Francisco, Santa Fe, La Scala, Amsterdam, Bregenz, Munich, Vienna Staatsoper, Venice, Naples...
