He studied voice in his native Amsterdam and started his career in the Netherlands, before singing in Antwerp from 1920 to 1927. In 1928, he joined the opera theater of Nürnberg, where he remained until 1956.

He sang more than 100 roles, the most important of which were Manrico, Florestan, Erik, Siegfried, Canio, Cavaradossi, Pedro and Schwalb (Mathis der Maler by Paul Hindemith).

After his retirement, he stayed in Nürnberg and taught voice.
