Gerhard Witting

23 September Königsberg/Kaliningrad – 25 December 1982 Berlin

Gerhard Witting sings Die Zauberflöte: Schnelle Füße, rascher Mut, with Willi Domgraf-Fassbaender and Felicie Hüni-Mihacsek

Witting made his debut in 1912 at the Komische Oper Berlin, moved on to Görlitz, Kiel, Schwerin. In 1923, he became a member of the Staatsoper Berlin. He was considered a heldentenor in his early years. In 1925, he sang Andres in the world premiere of Wozzeck; most of his career, he was a highly thought of comprimario. He sang as a guest all over Germany, in Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, and Bayreuth. His career lasted as long as 1953. Very few recordings captured his voice, this short one, unfortunately, being already the most interesting.
