From 1941 to 1944, he fought for the Red Army against Nazi Germany. He studied voice only after the war (with Aleksander Arder at the Tallinn conservatory), and got a late start as a singer: he was at the Tallinn opera from 1956 to 1971 and again from 1973 to 1977; the two years in between were spent as a soloist with the Estonian Philharmonic. Among his most importants parts were Otello, Radames, Manrico, Canio, Don José, Cavaradossi, and Herodes.
