After starting in 1940 as an actor, and after vocal studies with Armanda Degli Abbati, Arno Niitof and Tiit Kuusik, he was a soloist in Tartu (Vanemuine Theater) from 1942 to 1947, and at the Tallinn opera from 1947 to 1969.

He sang lots of operetta roles, plus Lyonel, Rodolfo, Cavaradossi, Turiddu, Ernesto, José, Almaviva, Gérald, Jenik, but also a few comprimario parts.

Otto was also a gifted painter.
